About emergency visits

When dental pain cannot wait

Dental emergencies don’t wait for office hours. Severe toothache, a knocked-out tooth, a broken filling, or sudden swelling can disrupt your day and feel frightening. At Paddington Smiles in W2, we keep same-day and next-day emergency slots open during the week so patients in Paddington, Bayswater, Marylebone, and the wider W2 area can be seen quickly.

Our team triages every emergency call to understand what is happening, provides clear advice for the time before your appointment, and prioritises pain relief, infection control, and stabilising the tooth. Treatment options and costs are discussed with you in clinic, never rushed.

Most common cases

Common dental emergencies we see at the practice

Here are the most common reasons patients call us for emergency dental care. If your situation is not listed below, call (020) 7402 4024 and our reception team will assess whether you need same-day attention.

Severe toothache or sharp pain

Throbbing pain, sharp pain when biting, or pain that wakes you up at night usually points to infection, a cracked tooth, or exposed nerve. We can diagnose the source and provide relief at the same visit.

Knocked-out or broken tooth

A tooth that has been knocked out, chipped, or broken needs prompt attention. For a fully knocked-out adult tooth, time matters — call us straight away while keeping the tooth in milk or saliva.

Lost filling or crown

A filling that has fallen out or a crown that has come loose can leave the tooth exposed and sensitive. We can re-cement, refit, or replace the restoration to protect the tooth.

Swelling, abscess, or bleeding

Facial swelling, a soft lump on the gum, uncontrolled bleeding after an extraction, or a strong taste of pus are signs of infection that need urgent dental review.
Before you arrive

What to do before your emergency appointment

While you are on your way to the practice or waiting for your appointment, these steps can help manage pain and protect the tooth.

For severe pain

Take paracetamol or ibuprofen at the recommended dose if you can. Avoid putting aspirin directly on the gum — it can burn the tissue.

For a knocked-out tooth

Pick the tooth up by the crown (not the root), rinse gently with milk or saline, and store it in milk while you travel to us. Time is critical.

For a broken or chipped tooth

Save any tooth fragments in a clean container. Rinse the mouth with warm water and use a cold compress on the cheek to reduce swelling.

For a lost filling or crown

Avoid chewing on that side. If you still have the crown, keep it clean and bring it with you — we can often re-cement the original.

For swelling or abscess

Rinse with warm salt water and apply a cold compress externally. Avoid heat on the area. Do not press the swelling.

For uncontrolled bleeding

Apply firm pressure with clean gauze for 15 minutes. If bleeding does not stop after extraction or trauma, call us or dial 111.

Our process

How our emergency triage works

When you call us, our reception team asks a few questions to understand the situation: what is hurting, when it started, whether there is swelling or bleeding, and any medical history relevant to treatment. Based on this we book you the earliest available emergency slot, usually the same day or next working day.

At the appointment, your dentist examines the tooth, takes x-rays where clinically indicated, identifies the cause, and discusses treatment options with you. Where we can resolve the issue at the same visit (drainage, temporary filling, re-cementing a crown, prescription if needed), we do. More complex treatment is planned with you, with costs confirmed before anything proceeds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about emergency dental care at Paddington Smiles.

How quickly can I be seen?
We aim to see emergency cases the same day where the schedule allows. Call (020) 7402 4024 — our team will triage your situation and offer either a same-day slot, a phone consultation, or a next-day appointment.
What does an emergency appointment cost?
Emergency appointments at Paddington Smiles start from £85. The fee covers assessment and immediate pain relief. Further treatment such as fillings, root canal, or extraction is quoted separately and discussed before any work begins. A full fee list is on our Fees page.
Are you open at weekends or evenings?
Our opening hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 6:00pm. We are closed on weekends and bank holidays. Outside our hours, please call 111 for advice, or visit A&E for severe facial trauma, breathing difficulty, or uncontrolled bleeding.
Do I need to be an existing patient?
No. New patients are welcome for emergency appointments. We will register you as a new patient at the time of the visit. Bring photo ID if available.
Can a knocked-out tooth be saved?
Often yes, if action is taken within the first 30 to 60 minutes. Handle the tooth only by the crown, rinse gently with milk if dirty, and try to place it back in the socket. If that is not possible, store the tooth in milk and call us immediately. Dry storage greatly reduces the chance of successful re-implantation.
Do you offer phone consultations for emergencies?
Yes. We offer phone triage for every emergency call. If your situation can be safely managed remotely — for example, advice for a chipped tooth without pain — we will guide you through it. If you need to be seen, we will book the next available slot.
How do I pay for emergency treatment?
Payment is taken at the end of the appointment by card or bank transfer. We do not require payment in advance for emergency visits, but we will quote you the expected cost before any treatment begins so you can decide whether to proceed.
What if I need treatment we don't provide in-house?
If your treatment needs additional training we don't provide here, we'll refer you to a dentist or surgeon with the relevant experience and help coordinate the onward booking.
